Seven Incoming Freshmen Earn UNITE Scholarships

Seven incoming Eastern Kentucky University freshmen are among 24 high school seniors throughout the region who earned “I Am UNITE” scholarships for championing anti-drug efforts.

The EKU recipients are:

Benson Presides at Makeshift Commencement Ceremony for One Student

Last winter, he shoveled nearly a foot of snow off a student’s driveway in Berea after that student challenged him on Twitter to make it possible for him to attend class the next morning.

On Sunday, May 17, Eastern Kentucky University President Michael Benson took time to preside at a one-person commencement ceremony, again due to a Twitter request from a student.

Commencement, Center Event Friday Night May Cause Traffic Delays

The combination of Eastern Kentucky University’s Spring Commencement and an event at the EKU Center for the Arts on Friday evening, May 15, will likely cause traffic congestion along the Eastern By-Pass in the vicinity of Roy Kidd Stadium, Alumni Coliseum and the arts center.

Herbarium Named for Long-Time Curator Dr. Ronald Jones

His persistent efforts as its long-time curator made the Eastern Kentucky University Herbarium one of the largest and most diverse in the region.

His groundbreaking book, “Plant Life of Kentucky,” earned raves nationally and will serve botanists and the public for years to come.

Agriculture Major Named President of National Delta Tau Alpha Honorary

Billy Cameron, Mt. Vernon, a junior agriculture major at Eastern Kentucky University, was recently named president of the national Delta Tau Alpha organization.

Ten students from the EKU DTA chapter, which Cameron serves as president, attended the recent national convention of Delta Tau Alpha, an honorary society for agriculture students.

Department of Communication Names Whitt 2015 Distinguished Alumnus

The Eastern Kentucky University Department of Communication has named Marcus C. Whitt as its 2015 Distinguished Alumnus.

Whitt earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and human relations from EKU in 1982 and added a master’s degree in sociology from Eastern in 1985.

Colonels "Kick Butt" during Annual Event

Approximately 20 faculty and staff members spent a recent lunch hour cleaning cigarette butts from campus grounds during the Colonels Kick Butt Team's annual "Butt Pick-Up” event. Participants gathered 6.6 pounds of butts in just one hour, well below the 15 pounds collected during the first such event in 2014.
