Planned Giving

Planned (or “deferred”) gifts offer such substantial donor benefits that at first blush they may seem too good to be true. Yet, many people are surprised to find they can make substantial donations to EKU in this manner while avoiding estate taxes and receiving income from the donated assets. Planned gifts provide either general EKU endowment support or resources for a specific campus program of your choosing. Examples of planned giving vehicles include:

Retirement Plans — IRA’s, Keough plans, 401-K plans and other arrangements may be gifted to EKU, providing a current charitable tax deduction and avoiding estate taxation.

Life Insurance — Naming EKU as the owner and beneficiary of either new or existing policies yields a donor a charitable tax deduction.

Charitable Gift Annuities — A simple contract between you and EKU allowing annual payments for life to you at a guaranteed rate. This rate is often higher than the interest made from commercial certificates of deposit.

Charitable Remainder Trusts — These trusts may be arranged to pay back to the donor either a fixed or variable rate of income for life or a set term of years.

Charitable Lead Trusts — These trusts can be structured to provide income to EKU for a set number of years, with the residual benefiting the donor’s beneficiary of choice, without estate or inheritance taxes attached.

Bequests — A simple method of remembering EKU and providing for its future in your will.

Planned Giving benefits may include:

  • Income — at times partially tax-free
  • Capital gains tax avoidance
  • Inheritance tax avoidance
  • Charitable income tax deduction
