Art Exhibit Features Works by Pulitzer Prize-Winning Editorial Cartoonist Benson
Works by Steve Benson, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Arizona Republic, will be featured at Eastern Kentucky University’s Giles Gallery Sept. 30 through Oct. 17.
Benson, who was awarded the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, has been the staff editorial cartoonist for the Arizona Republic for more than 30 years and was a Pulitzer finalist in 1984, 1989, 1992 and 1994.
He has also earned a National Headliner Award, an Overseas Press Club Citation for Excellence, a Rocky Mountain Emmy, a place in Who’s Who in the West, and several Best of the West and Arizona Press Club Awards.
His cartoons are nationally distributed by Creators Syndicate and have also appeared in Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, the New York Times and The Washington Post, as well as on CNN, MSNBC, ABC’s Nightline, CBS’s 60 Minutes and PBS’s MacNeil-Lehrer Report.
Benson will discuss his work in a gallery talk on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 5 p.m.; a reception in his honor will follow at 6 p.m.
Benson, the brother of EKU President Michael Benson, will also make several class presentations during his visit.
Also on display in the Gallery Sept. 30-Oct. 17 will be exhibits of fiber and textile pieces by installation artist Jan Ru Wan and ceramics by Tina Gebhart.
Wan is an assistant professor at the College of Design at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Gebhart, who concentrates on functional ceramics that “pursue lyrical form and curving elegance,” is an assistant professor at Gettysburg College.
An opening reception for Wan and Gebhart will be held Monday, Sept. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. Wan will discuss her work.
All events are free and open to the public.
The Giles Gallery is located in EKU’s Campbell Building on Crabbe Street. Gallery hours for the Fall 2013 semester are Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and Fridays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
