Book Drive Benefits Martin Luther King Jr. Academy in Memphis

Posted: February 21, 2013

Eastern Kentucky University’s African/African American Studies program is hosting a book drive through March 8 to benefit the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy in Memphis, Tenn.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Academy is an alternative school for at-risk youth in grades 6-12.

In 2011, AFA students visited the Academy and donated enough books to begin the school’s library. Salome Nnoromele, director of the African/African American Studies program, said, “We want to collect more books to help build MLK Jr. Academy’s library to enrich the lives of their students, providing them with opportunities they would otherwise not have.”

Books suitable for donation include new and used fiction, non-fiction, self-improvement books, African American heritage books and others appropriate for grades 6-12.

Books can be donated at the Powell corner on Feb. 27 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. or anytime at the AFA office in Miller 110. For book pickup, call the AFA office at 859-622-1299.
