EKU 7th in 24-Team Great American Mock Trial Invitational, Ahead of Two Ivy League Schools
Eastern Kentucky University placed seventh in the 24-team Great American Mock Trial Invitational Nov. 3-4 in Washington, D.C.
“Invitations to this tournament are highly coveted,” said Dr. Sara Zeigler, one of four coaches for the team, “and the conventional wisdom says that a top-ten finish (there) is similar to a top-ten finish at the National Championship.”
The EKU team, composed entirely of Kentuckians (several coming from rural communities of less than 5,000), finished ahead of teams from two Ivy League schools – Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania. It also surpassed teams from American University, the University of Georgia, the University of Maryland, Miami University, University of California at Berkeley, UCLA, and others. It conducted trials against Miami, the University of Virginia, Howard University and Macalester College.
EKU’s Matthew Boggs, a chemistry major and Honors Program student from Whitesburg, was honored as Outstanding Witness. Caleb Taylor, a political science major from Union, was recognized as Outstanding Attorney.
Other members of the Eastern team were Jade Petty, psychology major from Stanton; Damir Siahkoohi, homeland security major and Honors Program member from Irvine; Anthony Sean Potter, political science and anthropology major and Honors Program member from Whitesburg; Joshua Lang, political science major and Honors Program member from Fort Thomas; Keifer Kentrup, philosophy major and Honors Program member from Taylor Mill; Cynthia Chang, biology major from Richmond; and Marcus Segura, political science and deaf studies major from Fort Thomas.
The team is coached by Joshua Leckrone, Lynnette Noblitt, Tom Parker and Zeigler.
“We are grateful to University Programs, the College of Justice and Safety, the Department of Government, and the College of Arts and Sciences for support, as well as to Distinguished Alumnus Robert E. Sanders for support of EKU Mock Trial.”
