The Center for Career and Cooperative Education at Eastern Kentucky University recently recognized the Amazon Fulfillment Network as its 2014 Employer of the Year.

In presenting the award, EKU President Michael Benson said Amazon “has shown dedication to the professional growth of EKU students and alumni.”

Since 2010, the Amazon fulfillment network has hired an EKU intern every semester and transitioned a high percentage of those interns into full-time employees.

Amazon is “recognized globally for its innovative spirit and dedication to customer service,” Benson said, “and we are very pleased to have EKU students and alumni as a part of its outstanding team.”

One of those EKU graduates who joined Amazon was on hand to accept the award. Dustin Spencer, a senior manager for Amazon fulfillment centers, is based in Lexington and has earned two degrees from Eastern – a bachelor’s degree in industrial safety and risk management in 2004 and a master’s degree in safety, security and emergency management in 2008.

“Amazon is proud to be in Kentucky where we’ve found great talent in abundance,” Spencer said. “Much of that talent has come from our recruiting efforts at Eastern Kentucky University. We are thrilled that many students, recent graduates and alumni have joined the Amazon family over the years, and we continue to hire for great, full-time jobs.”

EKU established its Employer of the Year award in 2003 to recognize employers for their contributions to the University. To qualify for the award, an employer must have a solid history of recruiting and hiring EKU students and alumni for part-time, internship, co-op and full-time positions, must actively participate in on-campus recruiting efforts and demonstrate a dedication to the professional growth of students.

Past recipients of the honor include Dean Dorton Allen Ford, Owens Corning, Ashland Inc., Baldwin CPAs, Bechtel Parsons Bluegrass, Total Quality Logistics (TQL), Kentucky Employers Mutual Insurance (KEMI), United Parcel Service (UPS), Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Social Security Administration and Sherwin Williams.
