EKU, Midway School of Pharmacy Sign Articulation Agreement

Posted: November 07, 2011

Eastern Kentucky University and the Midway College School of Pharmacy have signed an articulation agreement by which up to 10 qualified EKU pre-pharmacy students will be guaranteed positions at the newly established Midway pharmacy school each academic year.

"We are pleased to enter into this guaranteed interview agreement with Midway College of Pharmacy,” said Dr. Lori Wilson, interim chair of EKU’s Department of Chemistry. “It allows students who want to work and serve in eastern Kentucky to study here provided they meet the high academic standards required by the agreement. As part of this agreement, we have aligned the B.A. Chemistry Pre-pharmacy Option to match Midway's pre-pharmacy requirements so that students completing the option with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible for the Guaranteed Acceptance Program."

Under the agreement, EKU applicants must have:

·         successfully completed (with a 3.0 GPA or higher) 40 of the 65 hours of the Midway pre-pharmacy curriculum at EKU.

·         not repeated any Midway pre-pharmacy requirement due to deficient (“D” or “F”) grades.

·         completed all Midway application requirements

·         applied no later than Jan. 1 for the projected entry year to the Midway program

All EKU students are welcome to apply, and additional students may be admitted.

EKU is offering all pre-pharmacy courses to satisfy the pre-pharmacy requirements and certain electives necessary for students to complete admission requirements for the Midway pharmacy school. Midway will accept all EKU pre-pharmacy courses (“C” grade or better) based on EKU’s accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and will apply those courses as meeting Midway’s pre-pharmacy requirements in order to facilitate a seamless transition.

“We strongly believe that this collaboration will be mutually beneficial for our students, our institutions, and the region as we set forth to prepare students for rural pharmacy practice,” said Midway College President William Drake Jr.

Midway College’s School of Pharmacy is located temporarily on the Mayo Campus of Big Sandy Regional and Technical Center in Paintsville. A permanent campus will be established at a later date.

In addition to its pre-pharmacy program, EKU’s Department of Chemistry offers pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-optometry and pre-veterinary options. It also offers bachelor’s degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry teaching, forensic chemistry and forensic biology, as well as a master’s degree in chemistry.
