Expert on Chinese Military, Warfare to Deliver Chautauqua Lecture
One of the leading scholars on Chinese military and warfare will speak at Eastern Kentucky University on Thursday, April 9.
Ralph D. Sawyer, author of many highly respected books in the field of Chinese studies, will address "Smashing Eggs with Boulders: Strategy and Tactics in Sun-Tzu's 'Art of War'" when he delivers a Chautauqua lecture at 7:30 p.m. in O'Donnell Hall of the Whitlock Building. The event is free and open to the public.
The founder and president of Sawyer Strategic Consultants, Sawyer is an independent historical scholar, lecturer and consultant to defense agencies and international conglomerates who specializes in Chinese military, technological and intelligence issues. He currently holds the positions of National Fellow at the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, University of Calgary, and Senior Research Fellow in the Warring States Project at the University of Massachusetts.
Sawyer is the author of original works of historical analysis such as "Ancient Chinese Warfare," "Tao of Deception: Unorthodox Warfare in Historic and Modern China," "The Tao of Spycraft: Intelligence Theory and Practice in Traditional China" and "Psychology of Warfare in Ancient China," as well as many acclaimed translations of Chinese philosophical and military classics, including "Seven Military Classics of Ancient China," "Sun-Tzu's 'Art of War,'" "The Tao of War: The Martial Tao Te Ching," "The Essence of War," "Ling Ch'i Ching: A Classic Chinese Oracle," and "Strategies for the Human Realm: Crux of the T'ai-pai Yin-ching." Sawyer's work has been translated into 16 different languages, including Chinese and Russian .
He has also lived for extended periods in several Asian countries, including Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Indonesia.
The Sawyer lecture is sponsored by several programs and departments at EKU: the Department of Government, the Asian Studies Program, the Intelligence Studies Program and the Honors Program.
