First Recipient Selected for Thacker Scholarship in Economics
Connie Moreland, a junior economics major from Wingo, is the first recipient of the Kyle J. Thacker Memorial Scholarship at Eastern Kentucky University.
Moreland, a graduate of Graves County High School, boasts a 4.0 GPA and is on track to graduate in May 2015. She will study in South Korea in the coming spring semester, followed by a summer internship in Australia.
Dr. Gyan Pradhan, chair of EKU’s Department of Economics, said Moreland, a student worker in the departmental office and an economics tutor, is “extremely bright, efficient, responsible, conscientious, and completely trustworthy. She had done a remarkable job as a tutor. Several students have communicated to me their appreciation for the effectiveness with which she has been willing to communicate her knowledge of economics to help them. I cannot think of a more worthy recipient of the Thacker Scholarship.”
The Thacker Scholarship, designed to reward outstanding junior and senior economics majors at Eastern, honors the memory of Kyle J. Thacker, a 2012 EKU economics graduate from Somerset who was accidentally killed by a shotgun blast in February 2013.
When the scholarship was announced, Kyle’s twin brother, Keith, said, “Economics is something that Kyle was passionate about, and I am glad that we will be able to share his passion with younger generations.”
