Franklin Named News Director at WEKU
Jonese Franklin is the new news director for WEKU-FM, the public radio service of Eastern Kentucky University.
Since 2011, Franklin has served as operations manager and local All Things Considered host for the station. The Versailles native has 11 years of experience in public radio.
“WEKU was founded on the principle of providing solid and dependable news and information to central and southeastern Kentucky,” Franklin said, “and I’m honored to be a part of that legacy. I look forward to joining our talented and dedicated news staff and to shaping our news content and coverage.”
Prior to joining WEKU, Franklin served as music and production director for WMKY at Morehead State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications, and as a music host/producer for WUKY in Lexington.
John Hingsbergen, associate manager and program director for WEKU, said he was “very excited” about Franklin’s new role with the station, which is effective July 14. “She takes the position well aware of the station’s long tradition of service to central and southeastern Kentucky with an award-winning news department She will have the important mission of continuing to move WEKU into use of new platforms for delivery of news content.”
The station reaches most of central and southeastern Kentucky through WEKU (88.9 FM in Richmond-Lexington), WEKH (90.9 FM in Hazard), WEKF (88.5 FM in Corbin) and WEKP (90.1 FM in Pineville) along with 106.7 in Frankfort, 96.9 in Barbourville, 96.3 in Harlan, 102.5 in Middlesboro and 95.1 in Pikeville.
In addition, many in central Kentucky enjoy a classical music format (with jazz overnight) at Classic 102.1, WKYL.
