Matt Roan Named Special Assistant to the President
Matt Roan, currently the President’s Council Fellow and Deputy Director of Athletics at Southern Utah University, has been named Special Assistant to the President at Eastern Kentucky University. He will assume his new responsibilities Oct. 1.
Roan earned a juris doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2012 after graduating summa cum laude in political science in 2007 and starring in football at Southern Utah University. The Virginia native transferred to SUU from Virginia Tech, where he also played football.
He has served as the President’s Council fellow at Southern Utah since July 2012 and was named Deputy Director of Athletics in April of this year. As President’s Council Fellow, Roan was heavily involved in the administration of various executive campus issues, including budgeting, capital improvements, personnel matters and strategic planning, as well as oversight of special projects as designated by the President or Council members.
While at the UK law school, Roan served as an administrative intern with the Wildcat football program and as a tutor/mentor for student-athletes.
“I am delighted that Matt Roan will be joining our senior leadership team,” EKU President Michael Benson said. “In a very short time, I am confident people will come to appreciate how bright, hard-working and conscientious he is and how much he loves this part of Kentucky. He will be an incredibly valuable asset to EKU.
“Matt is a first-generation college graduate who earned a Division I football scholarship and later completed a law degree,” Benson continued. “His is one of those success stories of a young person who was given an opportunity and then did the most with the chances presented to him.”
Benson, who earlier in his own career served as a special assistant to former University of Utah President Bernie Machen, now President at the University of Florida, said Roan will be involved with “a whole host of things,” including special projects, fund raising, Board of Regents issues, and other duties as assigned. “He will also assist our University Counsel’s office, given his legal training.”
Roan, who received All-Great West Football Conference honors in each of his three seasons at Southern Utah as well as various academic honors, participated in the Minnesota Vikings’ camp as a rookie free agent in 2008.
He also has worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Dayton School of Law, as a law clerk for a general practice law firm and county attorney in Virginia, and as an assistant football coach at Hargrave Military Academy.
Roan and his wife, Mallory, have two daughters.
