Dr. Roger Cleveland, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Eastern Kentucky University, has been named to the School Curriculum, Assessment and Accountability Council by Gov. Steve Beshear.

SCAAC, composed of two parents, two teachers, two superintendents, two principals, two local school board members, two school district assessment coordinators, two employers in the state, two university professors and one at-large member, advises the Kentucky Board of Education on the design of the testing and accountability system and the highly skilled educator program.

The council is tasked with making recommendations concerning Kentucky’s system of setting academic standards, accessing learning, holding schools accountable for learning, and assisting schools to improve their performance. It advises the KBE and the Legislative Research Commission on issues related to the development and communication of the academic expectations and core content for assessment, the development and implementation of the statewide assessment and accountability program, the distribution of rewards and imposition of sanctions, and assistance for schools to improve their performance.

Cleveland, who joined the EKU faculty in 2008, was recently awarded the Dr. Joseph H. McMillan Faculty Award for outstanding teaching and research by the Kentucky Association of Blacks in Higher Education. In 2007, he was presented the Kentucky Educational Leadership Award by Nova Southeastern University and was the 2005 recipient of the Black Achievers Adult Award. He was nominated for the Kentucky Human Rights Commission of Hall of Fame in 2010.

Cleveland, who will serve on the council through April 2014, holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Morehead State University, a master’s degree in sociology of education from Union College, and a doctoral degree in educational foundations (with a concentration on social and cultural foundations of education) from the University of Cincinnati.
