Savings Continue for Motorcycle Rider Education Courses Across Kentucky
Savings continue for Kentucky Motorcycle Rider Education Courses throughout the Commonwealth.
The Basic RiderCourses are offered in 17 Kentucky communities for costs that range between $75 and $100 for the 20-hour training program. The costs average out to less than $5 per hour in each of the training programs available.
“It is a great opportunity to take advantage of the training and the fees paid for licensing and registration that go for the benefit of the rider training programs,” said Terry Kline, Eastern Kentucky University/Kentucky Motorcycle Program project director. “Most of the sites are within one hour of Kentuckians and are available on weekends throughout the riding season, which is one reason for the positive response to the program.”
Rates for the BRC program will not exceed $100 for the 2½-day session. Rates for the BRC 2 program will not exceed $25 for the one-day program. Many site providers are able to offer the BRC 2 program without any fees during this training period. Fees vary based on the local provider of the rider education program.
Completion of the Basic RiderCourse or the Basic RiderCourse 2 can result in a license skill test waiver and insurance rate reductions, along with providing the basics of the riding experience. In all local site offerings, motorcycles and helmets are provided for those participating in the Basic RiderCourse. The Basic RiderCourse 2 is designed for those that want to be trained on their personal equipment ranging from scooter-style cycles to three-wheeled cycles.
Completion of the Basic RiderCourse 2 is especially recommended for riders who are just returning to riding after a lapse in time on the motorcycle and in traffic flow. Participants in the Basic RiderCourse 2 must have a valid Kentucky motorcycle permit or a valid motorcycle license from an approved state and provide a street legal machine in good condition for the one-day training period. Protective gear is required for the BRC and BRC 2 programs any time the motorcycle is in operation.
“Reduced prices are available due to the Kentucky Motorcycle Safety Commission’s effort to redirect the license and registration fees back into rider training,” Kline said. “This effort to reduce overall costs is an excellent opportunity for novice and experienced riders to receive training at a reduced price, or at no cost with some of the BRC 2 programs across the state. Novice and experienced riders of two-wheel and three-wheel equipment are eligible for excellent training programs in the Commonwealth following the guidelines of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation within a reasonable distance of your home.”
All KMP RiderCoaches are certified by the MSF and EKU/KMP to provide the training in all coursework. To locate training sites within a certain area, call toll-free 1-800-396-3234 or visit www.msf-usa.org (click on Kentucky in map).
“You may only have to travel a few miles to your local site to have some fun and reacquaint yourself with the rider responsibilities and the driver responsibilities of sharing the roadway,” Kline added. “Please help to make safety awareness part of the fun and recreation when using motorcycles on the roadway this year.”
