SBDC Consultant Wins Top Honor for Kentucky
John Preston, consultant in the Somerset office of Eastern Kentucky University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC), has received the 2011 Kentucky State Star from the Association of Small Business Development Centers.
The honor is awarded annually to outstanding SBDC employees who make “significant contributions to their region and show a strong commitment to small business,” said Michael Rodriguez, director of the SBDC at EKU. Preston was formally recognized at the ASBDC national conference in San Diego on Sept. 6.
Preston, a Boyle County native who now resides in Monticello, joined the EKU SBDC in 1999 after logging almost three decades of experience in business, mostly in banking, mortgage and consumer lending and personnel management. He has owned and operated his own insurance firm.
Preston serves the Center’s 15-county service area as a general management consultant, working one-on-one with clients and coordinating training workshops.
“John has always been very willing to work with me on anything I ask of him,” Rodriguez said. “He is self-motivated, having increased both his client hours and client investments in the past couple of years.”
From Fiscal Year 2009 to Fiscal Year 2010, Preston increased his client hours nearly 36 percent and is on course to maintain the 2010 volume for the current year. His client investments increased from $271,000 for Fiscal Year 2009 to $1,986,600 for Fiscal Year 2010, an increase of 633 percent.
Preston was welcomed into the Million Dollar Loan Club for 2010 and this year “has maintained this momentum and already garnered over a million dollars in investments,” Rodriguez noted.
