Spring Seminar: "Research Ethics for Graduate Students"
The Graduate School at Eastern Kentucky University is offering a seminar in the spring semester of 2012 entitled “Research Ethics for Graduate Students.” Scholarships will be provided for 15 students to take the one-credit-hour seminar.
Topics covered include ethical issues concerning honesty in research and scholarship, including plagiarism, fabrication or falsification; intellectual property; performance of research, e.g., the use of animals and/or humans, experimental design, etc; reporting, distribution, and use of research results; and, miscellaneous ethical issues in research and scholarship, e.g., whistle blowing, conflicts of interest, etc.
The seminar will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 1:25 to 2:15 p.m. Class meetings will consist primarily of guest lectures by faculty with specializations in applied ethics from the Departments of Philosophy and Religion, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Government, Communication, and Chemistry.
Students will be provided theoretical frameworks and conceptual tools for the analysis and resolution of ethical issues in those areas of research in which most graduate students are engaged, including health care, environmental and animal studies, childcare and parenting, criminal justice, political science, public administration, sports, art, literature, music, communications, computer science, technology, and business.
Working with mentors in their respective fields, students will be expected to write a 4- to 5-page paper in which they analyze and resolve an ethical issue involving research in their particular area. This paper will be developed into a 15-minute presentation to be given during a mini-conference to be held on the Richmond campus at the end of the semester.
For more information on the seminar, contact Dr. Jaleh Rezaie at 622-1742 or Jaleh.rezaie@eku.edu or Dr. Laura Newhart at 622-2574 or Laura.newhart@eku.edu. Graduate students interested in attending the seminar should contact their advisors and/or graduate coordinators.
