Founded in Richmond, Kentucky, in 1906, the university offers both undergraduate and graduate level programs as well as professional training in a variety of fields including education, business, health sciences, art, justice, science and safety. Originally established to help prepare quality teachers for elementary and secondary schools, more than 100 years later, EKU has expanded exponentially to currently offer over 15,000 students each year over 165 general and liberal arts programs.

About the College of Justice and Safety

In 1974 the College of Law Enforcement was established on campus at Eastern Kentucky University. Over the years EKU has continued to grow, and the College of Law Enforcement has evolved along with it, adding new programs and developing to include a much broader range of educational opportunities. Programs in criminal justice, police studies, fire, corrections, safety, security and emergency management were added, broadening the scope of degree programs available to our students. To more accurately describe the scope of curriculum and reflect the ongoing evolution of the industry, the college was renamed the College of Justice and Safety in 2000.

Today the College of Justice and Safety continues to carry on the traditions and innovation established during its rich history, and has become a recognized leader in fields ranging from Emergency Management, Safety, Fire Science, Corrections and Juvenile Justice, to Homeland Security. In 1998 the State of Kentucky recognized the College of Justice and Safety for its progress developing an innovative curriculum by naming the college a Program of Distinction, thereby recognizing it as a source for expertise across the industry.

In an ongoing effort to provide students and current working professionals with the opportunity to continue their education and earn a degree, Eastern Kentucky University now offers online Bachelor of Science Programs in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology, Fire Protection Administration, Occupational Safety, and Corrections and Juvenile Justice Studies. The same curriculum and degrees featured in our campus programs can now be taken online. Through an interactive learning environment featuring traditional learning methods as well as video learning modules and a direct connection to our faculty of professional fire, safety, homeland security, and emergency professionals, EKU delivers a truly comprehensive education.
