Crosslisted courses in Blackboard at EKU

Our Blackboard system automatically recognizes crosslistings designated in Banner, and creates an “extra” site that collects all the enrollments from the separate CRNs.

Each collected site is identified with a special suffix on the course name.

·       If you are teaching via ITV, look for a course name that ends with “KTLN.”

·       If you are teaching a course that combines undergraduate and graduate students (e.g., at the 500/700 levels), look for a course name that ends with “C/L.”

·       If you are teaching a course that is crosslisted between departments, look for a course name that ends with “C/L.”

·       If you are teaching a course through Kentucky Virtual University, look for a course name that ends with “C/L.” (You may not have understood your course to be crosslisted, but all KYVU courses have an “on-campus” CRN and an “off-campus” CRN.)

Note: the course name for your collected site is based on whatever section in the collection has the lowest CRN, and the course name includes that number. For example, the Blackboard course named “MUS 789 Workshop in Choral Music, Sum 03 I, 30662 C/L” is set up to combine MUS 589 (CRN 30663) and MUS 789 (CRN 30662). After you have identified your collected site, please change the name to be meaningful to you and your students. For directions to change course names, see http://www.eku.edu/onlinelearning/bbdocs/instr_courselists.htm.

If you know that you are teaching a crosslisted course but you see no appropriate suffix, or if you face a more complicated crosslisting, such as a 500/700 course that is taught via ITV, please contact onlinelearning@eku.edu for help.

You may use any of your Blackboard sites in any way that you find beneficial, but we think you will enjoy the convenience and efficiency of your collected site. Here are some recommendations:

·       Plan to make ONLY the collected site “Available” to your students. You can make the rest of the sites disappear from your own list by following the directions at http://www.eku.edu/onlinelearning/bbdocs/instr_courselists.htm.

·       Some instructors elect to keep the separate “section” sites active, for purposes of grade recording, discussions, etc. If you do so, be sure to change the names on the separate sites to identify them clearly on your list of courses.

·       Remember that you must consult the Banner system (not simply your Blackboard list of users) to review the official rosters for your course. As students add to the various sections of your class they will automatically be added to your collected Blackboard site, but the system does not remove students who drop.
