Semester: Spring 2010
Course Subject: POL
Course #: 212
Course Section: 003 B
Course Title: Introduction to Comparative Politics
Course Section Information: POL 212 is a three credit-hour general education course with no prerequisites. The course examines the historical, cultural, social, and economic influences that shape politics in select countries, including Nigeria, South Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, the United Kingdom, and China. The political institutions and processes of these countries are compared with those of other countries and against general theories and principles in order to widen our understanding of politics. The study of comparative politics is important because it increases our appreciation of the advantages and disadvantages of our own political system; it enables us to learn from other countries; it helps us understand the connection between domestic and international affairs; and it equips us to become more informed citizens so that we can more effectively develop our own political opinions and participate in political life.
