Semester: Spring 2010
Course Subject: ACC
Course #: 820
Course Section: 001 B
Course Title: SURVEY OF ACCOUNTING
Course Section Information: ACC 820 Survey of Accounting. (3) I. Designed for students who have completed a nonbusiness degree and now wish to acquire a background in accounting and/or business.

Internet Access: Reliable internet access is a requirement for this course. High-speed internet access (i.e., cable, ISDN, etc.) is recommended but not necessary. All chapter quizzes and examinations will be performed via the internet, while the final exam will be held in a computer lab in the BTC building. Students must obtain and use an EKU e-mail account on a regular basis, as well as enter that e-mail account into Blackboard. Also, there are many resources available for the text online.

Blackboard: Students must use the Blackboard system. Class announcements, assignments, changes to the syllabus, and online quizzes and exams will be posted on Blackboard. Blackboard should be checked on a weekly basis for updates. Students must use a valid EKU e-mail address in Blackboard.

Online, Self-Study Course: This course is designed as an online, self-study course along with an in-class comprehensive final exam to be taken in a computer lab in the EKU BTC building. The student is able to study for this class at convenient times, and take the quizzes and examinations from any computer with internet access. Since this course is self-study it is for those individuals who are self-motivated, disciplined, and very comfortable with learning new material on an individual basis. Therefore there will be minimal contact with the instructor of the course, with such contact being reserved for technical difficulties and problems with Blackboard and the internet rather than explanation of chapter material. If you need classroom type instructor explanation of the course material, please enroll in the ACC 201 and ACC 202 series of courses, and attend class on the EKU Richmond campus or through ITV-KTLN at one of the remote campus sites. It is highly recommended that you complete at least one chapter each week during the 16-week semester.

Course Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to provide a study of the essential topics in financial and managerial accounting needed to have a solid foundation for your future MBA courses and for use in the business world. This course fulfills the prerequisite for ACC 850 in the MBA core.

Quizzes: A ten-point graded quiz must be completed for each chapter after the chapter material is thoroughly studied. Each quiz will usually consist of ten true-false/multiple choice questions. The quizzes are designed for the student to determine how well he or she understands the chapter material before taking the chapter exam.

Examinations: A 50-point graded exam must be completed for each chapter. The exams will consist of 25 or more multiple choice questions and are designed to assess how well the student comprehends the topics discussed in the chapters. Some of the later chapter exams may have a few bonus points available in the form of additional multiple choice questions.

Please note: there will be a controlled comprehensive final exam take in a computer lab in the BTC building on EKU's campus during finals week. A student MUST EARN 70% on the Final Exam to pass the course (e.g., earn a "D" or higher) regardless of the total other points earned on the chapter quizzes and exams.

Course Work Deadlines:
There will be three completion deadlines during the semester. [Look for these in the syllabus.] The deadlines will be for five chapters at a time. Any quiz or exam may be taken early, and it is highly recommended that at least one chapter be completed each week during the semester.

Important Student Agreement: A student agreement must be signed and faxed or mailed to the instructor before you may begin taking the quizzes and exams. The student agreement is found on the course’s Blackboard site. After receiving the signed agreement, the instructor will e-mail you a password needed to take the quizzes and exams. Please read the agreement carefully, sign and date it, and fax or mail it as soon as possible.

Exam and Quiz Copyright Rules for this Course:
Students may not copy or print any exam or quiz questions or answers. To do so will violate the requirements for this course and the copyright protection laws in place for the publisher. Anyone found to be copying or printing exam contents will automatically receive a failing grade for the course and will be reported to the publisher for possible prosecution. Remember, you have simple and complete control over these consequences; do not copy or print and you will have no problems.

Student Work: Each student must complete all quizzes and exams without the help of anyone else. Any student found receiving help during an examination or has someone take any part of an exam for him/her will receive a failing grade for the entire course.

Important Note: A grade of “I” (incomplete) will NOT be given for this course. Any quizzes and exams not taken before the deadlines for this course will not be allowed to be taken later and a grade of zero will be assigned for those missed items. It is entirely up to the student to budget his or her time to complete all quizzes and exams on time. Do not ask the instructor for time extensions. The deadlines for completing the quizzes and examinations for this course are shown below and will not be extended.
