Digital Books Request

NOTICE: Publishers are now requiring students purchase a copy of accessible textbooks directly from them. If you need a book that can be accessed by a screen reader, please purchase this from the publisher. Make sure you ask them if the electronic copy you are purchasing is accessible. Publishers will not provide our office with an accessible format even if you’ve purchased a brand new hard copy of your book.

If you would still like to request a digital copy from our office you may go to the Center for Student Accessibility  website. Some older books may still available to us.

The EKU Center for Student Accessibility (CSA) offers, free of charge, a digital books program to those individuals registered with our office for digital books. Digital books are an innovative way in which users can have textbooks readable by text-to-read software. EKU provides students the use of Read & Write and to read text out loud. To obtain this service fill out the digital books request form, produce a copy of your textbook purchase receipt, and turn it into the CSA Office. E-copies of your books will not be released until you provide a copy of your book receipt or other proof of ownership.

Digital books are obtained several ways:

  •  Request PDF from the Publisher. This may take 1-2 weeks.
  •  Request that to unbind or take apart the book for scanning. CSA will need your permission to do this. The digital books program requests processed first-come, first-served basis. Once received, the digital books are emailed to students at their EKU email address.

Some publishers are more efficient than others at issuing digital versions.

Digital Books Program

  1. I understand that I am participating in the digital books program. I understand I receive Read & Write software (text to read) and do not have to return it upon my graduation in leaving EKU. If the software needs to be updated after graduation or leaving EKU, I’m responsible for the update.
  2. I understand that the textbooks in which I am asking to be converted will be unbound, the spine will be removed, and that the books can be returned to me spiral bound.
  3.  I understand that CSA does not guarantee that the book provided will be completely transferred into a PDF or RTF (Rich to Text is a Word-compatible document file). The scanning equipment used to scan your textbook is high-speed and is designed to read text, not pictures, graphs, etc. Handwriting, underlining, highlighting, etc. could negatively impact the digital book. Ultimately, there may be some material for which you will have to refer to your textbook to study. These items include, but are not limited to: Tables, graphs, pictures, example problems, illustrations, maps, information that is printed on colored pages, italicized letters (if the print is too small), fine print (this also includes footnotes), hand written words or unrecognizable fonts, words printed in color, etc.
