Commencement, Center Event Friday Night May Cause Traffic Delays
The combination of Eastern Kentucky University’s Spring Commencement and an event at the EKU Center for the Arts on Friday evening, May 15, will likely cause traffic congestion along the Eastern By-Pass in the vicinity of Roy Kidd Stadium, Alumni Coliseum and the arts center.
The University-wide commencement ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the football stadium, though inclement weather could cause the event to be held in adjacent Alumni Coliseum. A performance by comedian Kathy Griffin at the arts center begins at 7:30 p.m.
Motorists coming to either event are reminded that Richmond and the EKU campus can be accessed from I-75 via either Exit 90 or Exit 87. Those taking Exit 90 can either come through downtown or take the by-pass that virtually encircles the city and leads eventually to the campus. EKU can also be accessed from US 25/421 or KY 52 (Lancaster Road/Irvine Road). Roy and Sue Kidd Way (the campus street that runs in front of the football stadium) will be closed from the Eastern By-Pass to Van Hoose Drive to facilitate pedestrian safety.
Motorists should also keep in mind possible delays on I-75 as resurfacing continues.
If held at Roy Kidd Stadium as planned, the University-wide ceremony Friday evening will include a fly-over by two aircraft representing EKU’s Aviation Program and a brief post-ceremony fireworks display.
In addition to the University-wide ceremony, each academic college at EKU is holding a convocation to honor its graduates. Those ceremonies are scheduled throughout the day Friday and Saturday at either Alumni Coliseum or the Center for the Arts.
