Department of Communication Names Whitt 2015 Distinguished Alumnus
The Eastern Kentucky University Department of Communication has named Marcus C. Whitt as its 2015 Distinguished Alumnus.
Whitt earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and human relations from EKU in 1982 and added a master’s degree in sociology from Eastern in 1985.
“Marc has been an outstanding public relations practitioner throughout his 32-year professional career, as well as a great advocate for both EKU and our department,” said Dr. Fran Dickson, chair of the Department of Communication. “We’re delighted to recognize his accomplishments in this way.”
Most recently, Whitt served 12 years as EKU’s associate vice president of public relations and chief communications officer. Currently, he is the public relations and marketing columnist for University Business magazine, the most regularly read publication for higher education leaders in the U.S. He has also taught public relations at EKU as an adjunct for the previous eight years.
Whitt's work has garnered more than 40 national, regional and state honors. In 2005, he received CASE Kentucky's prestigious Beth K. Fields Lifetime Service Award, and in 2012 was ranked among the top half of nominees for the Educational Marketing Group’s “International Brand Master Award,” for which his professional work was judged by a panel of international marketing and public relations professionals. Most recently, he authored a chapter for ExecSense Publication's book, “Marketers Making a Difference, Vol. 2,” available on Amazon.com.
A native of Paintsville, Whitt also maintains a vibrant consulting business.
