Erie Insurance Company has established a $10,000 fund to provide scholarships for students in the Risk Management and Insurance program at Eastern Kentucky University.

Beginning with the Spring 2015 semester, Erie will sponsor a writing competition for EKU Risk Management and Insurance majors. The winning student will receive a $1,500 scholarship for each of the following two semesters. Erie intends to renew the scholarship in 2017 for successive three-year periods.

As the large (A+ Best-rated) property-casualty insurer based in Erie, Pa., moves into the Kentucky market and establishes agencies, it is working closely with the EKU academic program, hiring graduates, creating internships, sponsoring a golf outing and establishing the scholarship.

“We are grateful for this recognition of our program,” said Dr. Burke Christensen, director of EKU’s Risk Management and Insurance Program, “and delighted to be associated with Erie Insurance as it joins the many fine insurers serving the Kentucky market.”

Scholarship support is a strong component of the University’s Risk Management and Insurance program, with many students competing successfully for national scholarships. So far in 2014-15, 13 of its 80 students have been awarded a combined total of more than $30,000 in scholarships, not counting the Erie gift.

In addition to national recognition for its students, Christensen was recently named among 13 “heroes” of the insurance industry, as identified by LifeHealthPro, an online resource for life and health insurance advisers.

EKU’s Risk Management and Insurance program, which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), offers the only undergraduate insurance degrees in Kentucky, preparing students for possible careers as underwriters, claims adjusters, risk analysts, account executives, marketing representatives and financial planners.

Erie Insurance, founded in 1925, serves more than 4 million customers in 11 states and the District of Columbia through its network of independent insurance agents.
