Lt. Gov. “Crit” Luallen will address 2,764 degree candidates and receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Eastern Kentucky University’s Spring Commencement on Friday, May 15.

The University is returning this year to a University-wide, outdoors ceremony. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Roy Kidd Stadium. In addition, each academic college will hold its own “convocation” on either May 15 or May 16.

Luallen, descendant of two Kentucky governors, was appointed as lieutenant governor last fall by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear. She previously served as the Commonwealth’s Auditor of Public Accounts, having won election to that post in 2003 and 2007. Prior to that, she served nearly seven years as Secretary of the Governor’s Executive Cabinet, the highest appointed position in Kentucky state government. Previous appointments include State Budget Director, Secretary of Finance, Secretary of Tourism, and Commissioner of the Department of Arts.

In 2009, Luallen was named Public Official of the Year by the Washington, D.C.-based magazine Governing for her impact on government in Kentucky.

The Frankfort native is a graduate of Centre College, where she serves on the Board of Trustees. She is a descendant of former Kentucky governors John J. Crittenden (1850-53) and Luke P. Blackburn (1879-83).

This year’s University-wide ceremony will recognize 106 associate degree candidates, 2,068 bachelor’s degree candidates, 551 master’s degree candidates, 17 doctoral degree candidates, and 22 specialist degree candidates.

Stephanie Smith, who is graduating with a master’s degree in public health, will speak on behalf of the graduating class.

After a concluding fireworks ceremony, a reception for the graduates and their families will be held on the Fitness and Wellness Center back patio.
