National Magazine Touts EKU GURUs as "Model of Excellence" in Student Success

A national magazine is touting a student group at Eastern Kentucky University among “models of excellence” for enhancing student success.

University Business magazine lists the EKU GURUs among its 2015 Spring honorees.

The 30-35 GURUs serve more than 2,000 students daily, “answering any and all questions about EKU and campus life,” according to the web site, That includes providing tutoring and other forms of homework help and answering questions about financial aid, registration, residence halls, and more. They staff three locations on campus, but are also available via Skype, Twitter, Facebook, chat and in person in other settings.

Mandy Eppley, who supervises the group, said GURUs “are part tutor, part resident advisor, part concierge.”

As the story points out, each GURU serves as a liaison to one or two academic departments and a few service areas. Unlike some such programs that are geared to assist at-risk students, the GURUs support all students.

University Business partnered with Higher One to introduce the Models of Excellence recognition program, which honors colleges and universities that have implemented “innovative, effective and inter-departmental initiatives that are bolstering student success,” according to the article.
