Student Receives Tau Sigma Scholarship
Alan Joseph Chandler, Nicholasville, a senior middle grades education major at Eastern Kentucky University, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the national Tau Sigma Honor Society.
Chandler is the founding president of the EKU chapter of Tau Sigma, an academic honor society designed to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students. Students earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher in their first semester are invited to join.
Chandler, a 2006 graduate of East Jessamine High School, transferred to Eastern from Bluegrass Community and Technical College in 2012.
“I was compelled to get involved at EKU,” Chandler said, “and this led me to Tau Sigma. Tau Sigma gave me the opportunity to connect with and help other transfer students across the EKU campus. The organization provides networking opportunities for all members and gives new members a channel to become acclimated to their new university.”
The EKU chapter was established in Fall 2013, and Gail Creekmore serves as adviser.
Chandler said he advises his fellow transfer students at EKU to “embrace the new opportunity and network to establish as many personal and professional relationships as possible.”
EKU’s Student Outreach and Transition Office assists transfer students, and adults returning or just starting their college experience. For more information, visit soto.eku.edu, e-mail the office at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 859-622-7686.
