Get Hands-On Experience with the Business of Turfgrass and Landscaping

Whether your interest is specializing in turf grass for athletic facilities or designing landscapes and outdoor spaces, EKU’s Certificate in Turfgrass and Landscape Horticulture can be used to enhance technical competencies for those working in, or wishing to join, the turfgrass and landscape industry. Our program combines the science of plants and cultivars with experience working in the university‘s turf plots and a foundation in business operations and management. Individuals pursuing a degree in landscape management, landscape construction, parks and recreation, and physical education/sports development can earn this certificate in conjunction with their degree to gain a competitive edge in the job market.

Career Outlook


Overall employment of grounds maintenance workers is projected to grow 3 percent from 2022 to 2032, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Around 170,300 openings for grounds workers are projected each year, on average, over the decade.

During the same period, about 1,800 openings for landscape architects are projected each year, on average. However, employment of landscape architects is estimated to show little or no change.

Turfgrass and landscape management knowledge is in high demand with many positions available in golf courses, commercial and residential lawn and landscape, landscape design/construction, sports fields and parks.

Curriculum & Admission


Learn essential skills for today’s turfgrass and landscape careers. Our programs are made up of high-quality courses and taught by experienced professors. EKU’s curriculum blends academic and professional preparation through course topics such as plant science, drone operation, principles of soils, agricultural economics, agribusiness, renewable energy systems, ecology, conservation, biology, chemistry, computer systems and applications, pest management, soil management, turf grass management, irrigation systems and horticultural equipment, plant identification, and landscape management.

A minimum of 12-13 credits are required to graduate.

Please note that certain degree programs have special admission requirements. Admission to the University does not mean automatic admission to all degree programs.
