Gift from Novelis to Support STEM Summer Camp at Eastern Kentucky University

The Novelis Aluminum Corporation recently donated $10,000 in support of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) summer camp to be hosted by the College of STEM at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). Novelis, whose global headquarters is in Atlanta, Georgia, is the leading producer of flat-rolled aluminum products and the world’s largest recycler of aluminum.

“Driven by our purpose of Shaping a Sustainable World Together, Novelis believes one of the best investments we can make is to inspire tomorrow’s innovators and problem solvers. We’re proud to sponsor the EKU STEM Summer camp again this year to support students as they develop critical thinking skills and explore opportunities in STEM. This partnership is exciting and continues to demonstrate our commitment to the communities where we live and work,” said Ms. Tammy Peyton, Benefits and Communications Specialist at Novelis.

In expressing his gratitude for the gift, Dr. Tom Otieno, the dean of the College of STEM remarked, “I am so grateful to Novelis for their amazing gift. It is due to the generosity of partners like Novelis that we can offer a five-day residential STEM summer camp, a $700 value, to high school students at an incredible bargain of $60!”

The camp is an annual event for rising high school juniors and seniors and will be held June 22-27 this year. “One of the goals of the camp is to inspire high school students to get excited about STEM subjects through academically focused activities and, as such, the academic curriculum features hands-on activities from multiple disciplines,” said Dr. Jason Fry, associate professor of physics who serves as the faculty coordinator for the camp.

The camp will also feature informational sessions in which campers learn about academic programs offered by EKU’s College of STEM, career opportunities to which these academic programs can lead, strategies for getting college ready, and the college admission process.

“The camp was specifically designed as a residential summer camp to give our participating high school students a firsthand experience of university campus life. To enhance their experience at our summer camp, recreational activities are incorporated into the camp schedule each evening such as time at the Rec Center,” said Ms. Aida Bermudez, the College of STEM enrollment counselor, who serves as the camp director.
