Our college offers a broad range of degree programs in STEM areas that meet the needs of our students and prepare them for their chosen career or advanced studies. Our outstanding faculty are committed to student success through excellent instruction, accessibility to students, and other high impact practices such as undergraduate research and hands-on instruction.


We provide state-of-the-art facilities including laboratory and instructional spaces that are well-suited for engaged and transformative learning and cutting-edge research. In addition, our three unparalleled outdoor facilities for environmental research and education and our Meadowbrook Farm facility provide students with unique experiences and study opportunities while also serving as learning resources for the community.

Awards by Area

Materials can be submitted in SLATE at Eastern Kentucky University’s scholarship application website.

Please note that a letter of reference from an EKU professor, an up-to-date resume, a statement of career goals and a financial statement of need is required for the application. These documents can be uploaded directly in the SLATE application.

If the EKU Professor would prefer sending your letter of reference directly to the Chair of the Honors and Awards Committee, they may do so. Please have them send the letter directly to Dr. Autumn Whitson by the deadline. All other materials must be submitted in SLATE.

David Eakin Outstanding Freshman in the Biological Sciences
The awardee will show evidence of high scholastic achievement and potential for advancing toward a career in the biological sciences.

Outstanding Sophomore in the Biological Sciences
The awardee will excel scholastically and demonstrate an interest in scientific organizations or clubs. There should be evidence of initiative and independence in pursuit of a career in the biological sciences.

Outstanding Junior in the Biological Sciences
The awardee will excel scholastically, be an active participant in science-oriented organizations or clubs, and demonstrate mastery of scientific principles and laboratory technique appropriate to an area of further study in the biological sciences.

Outstanding Senior in the Biological Sciences
The awardee will demonstrate the following: consistently excellent scholarship, involvement in scientific organizations or clubs which reinforce career interests, special recognition or awards, leadership and service activities involving other biology students, and a mature attitude toward pursuing a career in the biological sciences.

Outstanding Undergraduate Wildlife Student
This award recognizes a student who has made a noteworthy contribution to the EKU Chapter of The Wildlife Society. The recipient must be a senior majoring in wildlife management, demonstrate commitment to their academic program, display involvement in campus organizations relating to the environment and/or student research activities, have experience working or volunteering for a resource agency, and be an active member of the EKU Chapter of The Wildlife Society. Applications for the award are reviewed by the faculty involved in the EKU Wildlife Management degree program.

Robert S. Larance Memorial Endowed Scholarship
This award recognizes students who have a strong interest and achievement in the areas of botany and/or the field sciences. The recipient must be an undergraduate student in botany, wildlife management or general biology with 60 or more hours who has at least a 2.5 GPA. The award honors Dr. Robert Larance, a former botanist in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Dan R. Varney Memorial Scholarship
This award is based on academic achievement, leadership and service, and potential for professional achievement. The scholarship was established by Dr. Varney’s parents in memory of their son. Dr. Varney, a geneticist in the department, was killed in an auto accident in 1990.

Arthur and Frieda Bingham Prize
This scholarship is awarded to a rising sophomore or junior who, as a major in biology (not enrolled in the pre-med emphasis), has demonstrated outstanding academic performance. The Bingham prize was established by Dr. Eula Bingham, an EKU alumna, in memory of her parents, Arthur and Frieda Bingham.

LaFuze Scholarships in Biology
These scholarships are the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships awarded by the department. Recipients must have attained a distinguished scholastic record and be pursuing a major in one of the programs offered by the Department of Biological Sciences. Awardees, who normally are rising seniors, will show strong evidence of potential for developing a career in the biological sciences. These awards were established by Dr. Harvey LaFuze and his family. Dr. LaFuze was a former Chair of the EKU Department of Biological Sciences.

Darnell Salyer Award (Top Senior in Chemistry)
The top senior student in chemistry will be awarded $100 in cash and a name plaque will be placed on the wall near the chemistry departmental office on the 4th floor of the Science Building. The awardee must be a graduating major in the Department of Chemistry. The student will be judged by performance in Chemistry courses at EKU as well as overall excellence in all other courses.

Top Junior Award
The awardee must be a student who has earned between 60 and 89 credit hours at the time of the selection. The student will be judged by performance in chemistry courses at EKU as well as overall excellence in all other courses.

Top Sophomore Award
The awardee must be a student who has earned between 30 and 59 credit hours at the time of the selection. The student will be judged by performance in chemistry courses at EKU as well as overall excellence in all other courses.

Top Freshman Award
The awardee must be a student who has completed less than 30 credit hours of classes at the time of the selection. The student will be judged by performance in the first attempt in CHE 111/112.

Top Student Awards
Top student awards are presented to the students who have the best academic achievement in the areas of general chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and inorganic chemistry.

Emerging Chemist Award
Awarded to the senior who has shown the greatest potential in chemistry. The student is judged by their potential in chemistry without regard to GPA.

The Thomas Herndon Scholarship (awarded to a junior or senior)
This scholarship is endowed from a bequest by Dr. Thomas C. Herndon, former professor and chair of the Chemistry Department. The award (amount to be determined when interest is known) will be deducted from the student’s registration fees for the next fall semester. The awardee must be a major in the Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science with a minimum 3. 0 GPA.

Outstanding Undergraduate Lab Assistant Award
Awarded to an Undergraduate Lab Assistant who has exceeded the expectations set out in the duties in which they have been assigned.

Outstanding Tutor Award
Awarded to a current tutor who has exceeded the expectations set out in the duties which they have been assigned.

The Go-Getter Award
For the student who exemplifies the positive attitude and enthusiasm of the namesake of the award, Mr. Joseph Bequette.

The Victor Bendall Organic Chemistry Award
This award was named after Professor Victor Ivor Bendall who served as a Professor in the Department of Chemistry from 1969 to 2001. The student is judged by the performance in organic chemistry courses at EKU as well as overall performance in all courses. The award carries an honorarium of $200.

The Aaron Schmidt Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a student nearing their first year at EKU, majoring in a science field (with preference given to forensic chemistry majors), is an out of state student, and has a 3.0 GPA. The recipient is awarded $1,000 toward registration and fees.

Students receiving awards in the forensic science program are selected by the advisors and director of the forensic science program.

Outstanding Student in Forensic Chemistry
Award to the most outstanding junior or senior in forensic chemistry courses. The student is selected by the faculty who teach these courses. The award carries an honorarium of $250.

Outstanding Student in Forensic Biology
Awarded to the most outstanding junior or senior in forensic biology courses. The student is selected by the faculty who teach these courses. The award carries an honorarium of $250.
