Center for Interdisciplinary Studies & Engagement (CISE)

The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Engagement (CISE) at Eastern Kentucky University advances interdisciplinary research, teaching and community engagement. By bringing together insights, methods and perspectives from across the University, CISE helps address complex and changing societal challenges, develop innovative and sustainable solutions, and foster critical inquiry, creativity and intellectual growth.

Strategic Goals

CISE brings together EKU students, faculty, staff and community members to strengthen interdisciplinary research, teaching and community engagement. Through presentations, workshops, initiatives, funding opportunities, and partnerships within and beyond the University, the Center encourages the exchange of ideas across disciplines. These connections support more collaborative and well-rounded approaches to societal issues and help prepare students to succeed in a dynamic, interconnected workforce.

CISE integrates methods, perspectives and approaches from different academic disciplines to create innovative learning experiences. This work enriches faculty instruction and student learning while helping students think across traditional academic boundaries and prepare for careers that draw on more than one field of study.

CISE serves as a bridge among the sciences, humanities, social sciences and professional disciplines. Through interdisciplinary inquiry and collaboration, the Center helps address complex intellectual, economic, cultural, environmental and political challenges facing local communities, the nation and the world. Its goal is to support meaningful, practical solutions to contemporary issues.

Programs

CISE is seeking nominations for the inaugural Excellence in Student Work awards.

Nominees’ work must:

  • Integrate insights and perspectives from various cultures, backgrounds and/or fields.
  • Use interdisciplinary methodology to research and construct a claim, argument and/or conclusion.
  • Demonstrate critical inquiry, innovation and/or intellectual creativity in articulating challenges or changes faced by our society.

Nominations can be submitted by faculty or students themselves. Submissions can take the form of research papers, course projects or creative output like film, podcasts or other multimedia work. Submissions must have been produced as part of a class held at EKU during the 2026-2027 academic year.

Submissions will be judged by an interdisciplinary panel of faculty. The finalists will briefly present their works at a scholar’s symposium in April and the top three students will receive prizes in recognition of their interdisciplinary achievement.

Submission deadline: March 30, 2027

Send submissions to: Dr. Claire Cooper

CISE invites submissions and nominations for the inaugural Interdisciplinary Teaching award to be held in April.

Interdisciplinary teaching is characterized by, though not limited to:

  • The integrated or combined use of insights, methods and perspectives drawn from typically separate fields of inquiry, different areas of study and/or different modes of creativity.
  • The application of integrated or combined approaches to the investigation of complex challenges and changes faced by contemporary society which tend to require multifaceted attention.

Applications should include a one-page (300 words max) statement of interdisciplinary teaching design and practice, whether in a course, on specific projects and assignments and/or in pedagogical collaboration with cross-disciplinary colleagues.

Applicants are encouraged to include a select, focused set of supporting documents such as a course syllabus, assignment description or other pedagogically relevant materials of not more than three pages.

Awards will include formal recognition via certificates for all finalists as well as $100 cash prizes for the top three, as judged by an interdisciplinary panel of faculty.

Application deadline: March 30, 2027

CISE uses its film series as a platform for interdisciplinary learning, dialogue and community engagement. It presents two film-based programs each semester, featuring thoughtfully selected documentaries, narrative films, and international and independent cinema that explore issues of broad academic and public interest.

The selected films will address social, cultural, political, historical, scientific, environmental, ethical and global issues, and will intentionally reflect a range of perspectives, disciplines, cultures and forms of storytelling. Given the educational value, interdisciplinary relevance and broad perspectives of the films, the series will stimulate meaningful dialogue among EKU students, faculty and community members.

Each screening will be paired with a facilitated interdisciplinary discussion with faculty, students, community partners or invited experts contributing perspectives from different fields. When appropriate, screenings may be organized in collaboration with academic departments, programs, EKU student clubs and community organizations.

The initiative will seek to make programming accessible, educational, inclusive and welcoming to the broader community, while creating opportunities for students to engage with faculty and community members beyond the traditional classroom. CISE will select films available through EKU library resources or platforms that provide appropriate educational and/or public performance rights.

CISE will host a monthly, one-hour interdisciplinary forum in which faculty and students from two disciplines share research projects, creative works and scholarly interests in an informal setting. Presentations will be conducted without slides to encourage dialogue and engagement. The event will also include interdisciplinary journal club discussions featuring books, articles, chapters and other scholarly works from different fields. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Ogechi E. Anyanwu, Director of CISE, for additional information.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, CISE will provide informal mentoring and consultation for students and faculty interested in incorporating interdisciplinary approaches into research, teaching and engagement. The Center will serve as a resource for developing collaborative projects and fostering interdisciplinary scholarships. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Ogechi E. Anyanwu, Director of CISE, for additional information.
