Practicum and Advanced Practicum Clinician Program

The EKUCC Practicum Program is designed for students currently enrolled in a graduate program in counseling, psychology, or other related fields. These are weekly training unpaid positions beginning In the Fall academic semester (August) and ending in the Spring academic semester (May). The practicum program has been specifically designed to give trainees a full range of experience found within a comprehensive university counseling center. EKUCC offers two types of practicum positions: Practicum Clinician Positions, and Advanced Practicum Clinician Positions.

Policy on Clients As Applicants to the Training Program

The ethical guidelines of the American Psychological Associate (APA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA) discourage counselors and psychologists from entering into dual relationships that “could reasonably be expected to impair the psychologist’s objectivity, competence, or effectiveness in performing his or her functions as a psychologist, or otherwise risks exploitation or harm to the person with whom the professional relationship exists” (Standard 3.05: Multiple Relationships, APA ethics code). Therefore any graduate student who has received counseling services at the EKU Counseling Center within the past 3 years may not subsequently apply for a practicum, graduate assistant, and/or internship position. Likewise, any current or former counseling center trainee will not be subsequently seen as a client-essentially a graduate student must choose either being in training or being in therapy (at the Counseling Center). Please note this restriction does not include brief screening appointments that resulted in no further treatment. Additionally, students who received counseling services at EKUCC more than 3 years ago and who are interested in a training opportunity can submit their materials for the desired position and these materials will be reviewed without consideration of prior clinical treatment.

Practicum Clinician Positions for 2026-2027

Eastern Kentucky Counseling Center (EKUCC) is pleased to announce we are now taking applications for the 2026-2027 Practicum Clinician positions. The practicum clinician positions are weekly training unpaid positions beginning in the Fall 2026 semester (August) and ending in the Spring 2027 semester (May 2027). The practicum program has been specifically designed to give trainees a full range of experience found within a comprehensive university counseling center. EKUCC is fully accredited by IACS (International Accreditation of Counseling Services) which is the “gold standard” specifically for campus counseling centers.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or other Mental Health Services Program
  • Must have had at least 1 semester or more of prior supervised clinical practice in mental health services provision
  • Must have already completed graduate coursework in the areas of basic counseling/clinical skills, ethics, and multiculturalism

  • Opportunity to be trained to provide counseling via TeleMental Health
  • Develop and refine clinical skills and competencies
  • Become familiar with functions/roles of mental health professionals in a university counseling center
  • Accumulate training and experience which increases competitiveness for pre-doctoral internships

Practicum Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Minimum 15 hours per week
  • Provision of Individual therapy (caseload of 6 clients per week)
  • Triage coverage (a minimum of 4.5 hours per week)
  • Participation in 2 hours of Supervision each week: one hour/week in group supervision/didactic training seminar with a Licensed Psychologist (HSP), and one hour in tiered supervision with a Doctoral Psychology Intern under the supervision of a licensed psychologist who has ultimate responsibility for the practicum student’s cases.
  • Participation in weekly face-to-face individual supervision with a Licensed Psychologist (HSP)
  • Completion of Clinical documentation
  • Administrative duties such as front desk coverage as needed
  • While not a requirement, trainees may have the opportunity to co-facilitate group therapy/workshops and participate in outreach programming

Application Deadline:  March 1st, 2026.  Once applications are reviewed, qualified applicants will be notified for an interview.

Advanced Practicum Clinician Positions for 2026-2027


Eastern Kentucky Counseling Center (EKUCC) is pleased to announce we are now taking applications for the 2026-2027 Advanced Practicum Clinician positions. Those are weekly training unpaid positions beginning In the Fall 2026 semester (August) and ending in the Spring 2027 semester (May 2027). The practicum program has been specifically designed to give trainees a full range of experience found within a comprehensive university counseling center.  


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must have successfully completed 1 year of practicum training at EKUCC, and
  • Must have met the beginning/basic practicum requirements of:
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or other Mental Health graduate program
  • Having at least 1 semester or more of prior supervised clinical practice in mental health services provision
  • Must have already completed graduate coursework in the areas of basic counseling/clinical skills, ethics, and multiculturalism

  • Further develop and refine clinical skills and competencies
  • Opportunity to be trained to provide counseling via TeleMental Health
  • Gain more familiarity with functions/roles of mental health professionals in a university counseling center
  • Accumulate training and experience which increases competitiveness for doctoral internships

Practicum Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Minimum 7.5 hours per week required, with opportunities to increase hours covered
  • Provision of Individual therapy under supervision (caseload of 2-3 clients per week at 7.5 hours minimum)
  • Triage coverage
  • Participation in weekly face-to-face individual supervision with a Licensed Psychologist (HSP)
  • Completion of clinical documentation
  • Administrative duties such as front desk coverage as needed
  • While not a requirement, trainees may have the opportunity to co-facilitate group therapy/workshops and participate in outreach programming
