The School of Applied Human Sciences offers programs focused on people and their needs. Students prepare for careers in schools, healthcare, community programs, businesses and other service and helping fields.

Gain Experience with Support from Faculty

Apply what you learn through hands-on experiences that vary by program. These may include labs, clinical work, fieldwork, community projects, research or study abroad. You may work with clients, support children and families, gain experience in schools or help run a campus restaurant.

Help others find their voice through EKU programs in communication sciences & disorders! Since 1969, EKU has prepared students for graduate education in audiology and  speech-language pathology through its undergraduate program. Our master’s degree program is fully accredited to prepare future speech-language pathologists for work with individuals across the lifespan.  

Students in EKU’s communication disorders programs gain clinical experience through the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. This nonprofit clinic has served EKU and the surrounding community since 1984. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, students use evidence-based practices to assess and treat communication and swallowing needs in children and adults from many backgrounds.

Prepare to support the mental health and well-being of individuals, students, and communities. EKU’s counselor education programs are built around a whole-person approach to care, meaning counselors consider each person’s experiences, strengths, goals and needs.

Students learn to build caring relationships, use proven counseling methods, and respond to changing needs in schools and communities. These skills prepare graduates to help others grow, overcome challenges, and lead more fulfilling lives.

Café Burrier is a working restaurant on EKU’s campus. Under the direction of Chef Sangwook Kang, students help operate the restaurant as part of their coursework. 

They gain experience in three-course meal preparation, nutrition, customer service, and restaurant operations.

Students from any major may participate in study abroad programs led by the School of Applied Human Sciences faculty. Options may include:  

  • A winter term in Florence, Italy, or a summer term in Ireland where students explore food, fashion and family life through visits to markets, culinary schools, fashion houses, textile factories, wineries and community programs.
  • Cuisine and culture, hospitality management, pop culture, and Asian studies in Japan and Korea during the summer term. 
  • Historical and modern speech-language therapy in London, England during the winter term.

Model Laboratory School is Kentucky’s only public teaching laboratory school. Located on EKU’s campus, Model serves students from preschool through 12th grade and gives EKU students a place to connect classroom learning with real needs in schools and communities.

Depending on their program, students may take part in fieldwork, clinical experiences, research or other hands-on projects at Model. These opportunities help prepare students for careers in education, counseling, family services, and other fields that support children and families.

    The faculty at EKU has played a large role in my experience at EKU. I have learned so much from the professors teaching my classes. The labs that EKU has on campus allowing students to sew, cook, teach preschoolers, and observe students in the classroom is a great plus to EKU. The professors are so knowledgeable about what they are teaching their students; and with the smaller class sizes building relationships within the classroom with my peers as well as professors is something I cherish.

    What I found surprising about the FCS education program at EKU was the variety of course work you get to take. As a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher you are required to be knowledgeable in many topics including child development, foods and nutrition, hospitality and tourism, and fashion and interior design.
