Applying as a Transfer Student

The Incoming First-Year and Transfer Student Application for Fall 2024 is now live.

Students who are transferring to Eastern Kentucky University are eligible to apply for Honors as part of our annual application cycle. Applications typically open early in the fall semester. Our priority application deadline is January 15, and our final deadline is April 1.

If you are currently in good standing in another honors program or college and are transferring to EKU, you are eligible to automatically transfer to EKU Honors. Please see Automatic Transfers for more information. You do not need to complete an application during the application cycle. Automatic transfers may begin EKU Honors in the fall or spring semester.

If you are not currently involved in an honors program or college at your institution and are transferring to EKU, you may apply during the upcoming application cycle as a transfer student. Transfer students may only begin EKU Honors during the fall semester. We do not open applications for the spring semester.

Please note: EKU Honors is only available to students attending classes on our Richmond campus. We do not offer online classes or classes at our regional campuses.

Automatic Transfers

Honors students transferring to EKU in good standing from another honors program or college are automatically accepted into EKU Honors. If you fit this description, please email ekuhonors@eku.edu with the semester that you plan to begin at EKU and attach a copy of your unofficial college transcript. You should also have your honors program/college director or dean email ekuhonors@eku.edu stating that you are in good standing in your program or college.

All emails regarding automatic transfer must be received by EKU Honors prior to the first day of classes of the semester in which you plan to begin at EKU and begin in honors. Honors transfer credit allowance will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Honors director. Typically, students may transfer up to six credits of honors coursework toward their EKU Honors coursework requirements.

Application Requirements and Process

Admission to EKU Honors is a competitive process. Students with a strong academic background who show the potential for excellence in college coursework are encouraged to apply.

You must apply and be accepted to EKU before you begin the Honors application process. Please plan ahead – it will take some time for your application to be processed. You cannot apply to Honors the day after you submit your EKU application. Applicants must submit an online application, which includes a resume and an essay. Our priority deadline for applications is January 15, and our final deadline is April 1.

Each application is holistically reviewed by a team of Honors faculty, staff and current students, who take into consideration each part of the application, as well as cumulative college GPA. The average cumulative college GPA of current EKU and transfer students is 3.70-3.80.

Students who apply by the January 15 priority deadline will receive a decision in mid- to late February. Students accepted as a priority applicant must confirm their acceptance by May 1.

Applications received between January 16 and April 1 will be evaluated on a rolling basis, and students can anticipate a decision emailed to them within 4-6 weeks of their application date. All decisions will be emailed by April 15.
