University Institutional Match Support

A university institutional match funding account will serve as cash match for external research grants that require a commitment from the University as a condition of applying for funding. Funds will also be used to match institutionally-funded start-up support for new faculty who make a commitment to pursue sponsored research funding.

To the extent allowable by a funding opportunity, matching obligations will be met through faculty reassigned effort prior to accessing funding from the institutional match account. This account will not be used to over-match, and all commitments will be for the purpose of satisfying minimal matching requirements as set by funding agencies. Deans will also be able to request funding from this account to support new faculty start-up awards when hiring for new faculty positions with high potential for a return on investment with sponsored research funding. Requests for match on internally-funded start-up awards will be on a 1:1 basis; the match account will provide an amount equivalent to the amount provided by the department and/or college.

An online application form (made available in September 2025 on this site) will be used by faculty who are preparing submissions to research funding opportunities that require match as appropriate, and the link will be continuously available to deans for start-up match requests. Upon receipt of a new match request, Sponsored Programs and Research Administration will review the request for compliance with the program guidelines and verify the availability of funding in the match account.
