EKU Dedicates ‘Fanfare’ at the Center for the Arts

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) dedicated a campus landmark on Tuesday.

‘Fanfare’ is a stainless steel sculpture approximately 22 feet tall and stands proudly in front of the EKU Center for the Arts. Further recognizing EKU’s commitment to serving the Commonwealth, Jane Marie Violette Schlater’s donation of ‘Fanfare’ honors her family. Jane is a staunch advocate for students from Appalachia and is funding scholarships honoring the Violette family and friends.

“The Fanfare sculpture accents the front of our amazing facility, further highlighting EKU as a premier destination for the arts and our commitment to veterans,” said EKU President David McFaddin. “We are incredibly grateful to donor Jane Schlater for her Beautification fund to celebrate the arts and honor those who have served our country.”

Jane Marie’s donation of ‘Fanfare’ reflects her family’s legacy of service. Her mother was a piano prodigy, strengthening her connection to the arts. She also honored her father and uncle, who served in WWII, and extended their service through medical careers and philanthropic endeavors.

Jane commissioned Louisville artist Dave Caudill to capture these themes through the creation of ‘Fanfare.’ A native of Corbin, Kentucky, Caudill used four brushed steel sections shaped as an exclamation point with illustrations of instruments that identify the various EKU musical divisions. A blue, gray and black granite base anchors ‘Fanfare’ with its softly lit instruments, which welcomes guests and students to experience the multiple genres of music.
