Kenton Buckner Honored with EKU’s Distinguished Service Award

Kenton Buckner, ’99 ’08, was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). The Best of Eastern Alumni Awards, presented annually during Homecoming weekend, celebrate excellence among EKU alumni. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes those who have demonstrated a heart of service with EKU or within their communities. Recipients of this award are giving of their time and talents in an effort to support awareness, facilitate growth and advocate for those around them.

Raised in Hopkinsville by a devoted single mother, Buckner learned early the values of integrity, hard work and faith. Those lessons, paired with his time at EKU, set him on a path that would define his life: service through law enforcement.

“My mother made sure that both my sister and I had access to education and the opportunity to pursue our career aspirations,” Buckner said. “From a young age, I knew I wanted to serve as a police officer.”

A proud graduate of EKU’s Police Administration program—and later the inaugural class of the online master’s in safety, security and emergency management—Buckner fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a police officer, serving nearly three decades in the profession.

His career began in Louisville, where he rose from patrol officer to assistant chief over 21 years. From there, he went on to lead as chief of police in Little Rock, Arkansas, and later Syracuse, New York. In each city, he worked to strengthen trust between communities and police, championing accountability, progressive reform and public safety initiatives that left each department stronger than he found it.

Yet, Kenton considers his greatest achievement the leaders he has mentored along the way. Many of his former commanders now serve as police chiefs across the nation—a living testament to his transformational leadership. Today, in his role with a national executive search firm, he continues shaping the future of public safety by guiding the next generation of leaders.

For Kenton, service is a calling—measured not just in professional success, but in faith, fairness and the lives impacted.

“Success is most meaningful when it’s shared,” Buckner said.
