The need for qualified, knowledgeable public health professionals working to advance policies and programs to ensure human health, protect the environment, inform state and federal legislators, and reduce waste has dramatically increased.

EKU’s Master of Public Health (MPH) program with a concentration in Environmental/Occupational Health & Sustainability (EOHS) equips graduates with the expertise to protect public health and help communities create and sustain healthier environments. As the frequency and complexity of global environmental health challenges grow, MPH-EOHS graduates emerge as skilled leaders, ready to research problems, develop solutions, and tackle these issues when they arise at the local level.

Career Outlook


The NACE Summer 2021 Salary Survey report found that individuals with an MPH had an average starting salary of $60,624. In contrast, the average starting salary for bachelor’s holders was $44,017, a difference of 38%. The American Industrial Hygiene Association’s 2023 Salary and Compensation Study reported the average U.S. base salary of persons with an MPH is $127,060 and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median salary for environmental scientists and specialists, including health, is $78,980 for the U.S.

Health Promotion Concentration

EKU’s master of public health (MPH) program with a concentration health promotion in prepares you with the knowledge and competencies needed to face public health issues and emergencies at the local, state and national level. Graduates leave the program prepared to take on leadership roles as culturally competent, skilled public health practitioners ready to address global health issues.

Curriculum & Admission


The MPH program offers the opportunity to make a valuable and positive difference in peoples’ lives. Regardless of where you live in the world, public health and environmental issues affect us all. With an MPH degree you can play a critical role in safeguarding the health of our fellow citizens from emerging and existing health threats through policy development and enactment as well as environmental monitoring and protection. EKU blends academic and professional preparation through courses related to total worker health, infectious diseases, food safety, water quality, biostatistics, research methods in public health, epidemiology, toxicology, and industrial hygiene.

A minimum of 42 credits are required to graduate.

Students may transfer up to 12 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 15 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

Previously earned credits must be reviewed upon admittance to EKU for appropriate articulation.

Academic Background Expectations for MPH Concentrations
So that timely progress toward the degree can be achieved, the following undergraduate prerequisite courses are expected to be completed prior to active participation in the program. Questions regarding prerequisites are welcome.
At least 1 physical science, 2 chemistry with lab, 2 biology with lab, college algebra, and 1 microbiology course at the undergraduate level.

EKU’s public health program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC)
