Eastern Kentucky University is excited to offer the Faculty Course Development Summer Institute, a four-week professional development opportunity for full-time faculty. The Summer Institute will provide faculty with the opportunity to be an “EKU Canvas Champion” as our institution adopts the Instructure Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), while also introducing pedagogical strategies in the development of new Benchmark (Master) Courses to serve as exemplars for other EKU faculty.

Developed by faculty/staff from the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, the Instructional Design Center, and EKU Libraries, the Summer Institute will provide an opportunity for participants to identify, organize, and develop the components of a successful course to best serve EKU’s students.

By the end of the Summer Institute, participants will:

  • Utilize the Canvas LMS to design a new course or fully redesign an existing course into a benchmark / master course that can be used by faculty who did not design the course.
  • Explore a range of pedagogical strategies that can be employed to enhance course design and teaching.
  • Describe the role of the Canvas Champion during the ‘24/’25 Academic Year and identify other PD topics that will be delivered by Canvas Champions in partnership with the FCTL, IDC, and Libraries.

Informed by pedagogical strategies and the principles of Quality Matters, Faculty participants will have the tools they need to develop strong student-centered instruction.

When is the Summer Institute?
This 8-week (four-session) institute will begin on Tuesday, June 10th and conclude on Tuesday, July 5th. With a combination of both synchronous and asynchronous components, selected faculty will be compensated at $3,000 after the course has been fully developed. Before applying, please ensure that you will have availability during this period to ensure full participation and benefit.
