Applying as an Incoming First-Year Student

The majority of EKU Honors students are accepted as incoming first-year students. If you are interested in beginning in EKU Honors in your first semester, you must apply during your senior year of high school. Applications typically open early in the fall semester. Our priority application deadline is January 15, and our final deadline is April 1.

Application Requirements and Process

Admission to EKU Honors is a competitive process. Students with a strong academic background who show the potential for excellence in college coursework are encouraged to apply.

You must apply and be accepted to EKU before you begin the honors application process. Please plan ahead – it will take some time for your application to be processed. You cannot plan to apply to honors the day after you submit your application. Applicants must submit an online application, which includes a resume and three short essays. Our priority deadline for applications is January 15, and our final deadline is April 1.

Each application is holistically reviewed by a team of honors faculty, staff and current students, who take into consideration each part of the application.

Students who apply by the January 15 priority deadline will receive a decision in mid- to late February. Students accepted as a priority applicant must confirm their acceptance by May 1.

Applications received between January 16 and April 1 will be evaluated on a rolling basis, and students can anticipate a decision emailed to them within 4-6 weeks of their application date. All decisions will be emailed by April 15.

Governor’s Scholars Program and Governor’s School for the Arts

Did you attend the Governor’s Scholars Program or Governor’s School for the Arts? If so, we think you’d be a great fit for our program! Our students who are GSP and GSA alumni tell us their honors experience tends to mirror their experiences in these summer programs. Our assistant director typically attends the college fairs at these events each summer, so if you plan to attend GSP or GSA, visit the EKU table to talk with an honors staff member.
