Honorary Degree Nomination Committee

Responsibilities
Each year, Eastern Kentucky University awards honorary degrees to persons in recognition of outstanding contributions to the University or to society through achievements in a particular field. The Honorary Degree Nomination Committee will consider those nominations, which must include the following criteria:

  • Recipients shall be distinguished in their fields and have demonstrated exemplary achievements. This recognition should focus attention on the University community’s commitment to the development of knowledge and the betterment of humanity.
  • No current member of the EKU Board of Regents nor active EKU faculty/staff member shall be so honored.
  • Honorary degrees shall be granted posthumously or in absentia only in unusual circumstances.

The names of potential candidates approved by the committee shall be submitted to the President.

Membership Composition

  • Committee Chair
    Collect nominations along with:
  • A letter of nomination, citing the candidate’s contribution to the field, the University, and/or humanity.
  • A biography or curriculum vitae of the candidate. The committee may request additional documentation about the nominee.
  • Letters of reference or other information that would illustrate the candidate’s qualifications for an honorary degree.
  • The Committee Chair will seek feedback, in confidence, from the chair of the department most closely associated with the nominee prior to committee deliberations.
