Clear Your Browser Cookies, Cache, and History

A lot of issues can be resolved by clearing the browser cookies, cache, and history and restarting your PC, especially issues within the learning management system (LMS) – Canvas.

Firefox – Recommended for Canvas because of LTI requirements (e.g., textbooks)

Firefox


  • Click hamburger menu (3 lines) in the upper right corner, click History, then click Clear Recent History
  • Set the time range after When: to Everything
  • In the Details window, check all of the options, then click Clear
  • Close Firefox and reopen it for changes to take effect

Chrome


  • Click vertical ellipsis (kebab menu) in the upper right corner
  • Click the Setting icon 
  • Click Privacy and security on the left side menu
  • Click the Time Range More dropdown, then select All time
  • Verify the checkboxes for Browsing historyCookies and other site data, Cached images and files, and Download history are all selected
  • Click Delete data
  • Close Chrome and reopen it for changes to take effect

Safari


  • From the Safari menu, click History, then click Privacy
  • Click Manage Website Data
  • Click Remove all
  • To clear your browsing history too, click History in the top menu bar and select Clear History whichwill turn gray when cache and cookies have successfully cleared
  • Close Safari and reopen it for changes to take effect

Edge


  • Click on the Settings and more (meatball menu) in the upper right corner
  • Select Settings then Privacy, search, and services
  • Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear
  • Choose a time range from the Time range drop-down menu
  • Choose the types of data you want to clear. For example, you may want to remove browsing history and cookies but keep passwords and form fill data
  • Select Clear now
  • Close Edge and reopen it for changes to take effect

Opera


The easiest way to clear everything in Opera is to:

  • Go to Settings (Alt+P)
  • Select Privacy & security on the left, then click Delete browsing data 
  • Select what you want to delete and the time range, like recent history or all time
  • Click Delete data
  • Close Opera and reopen it for changes to take effect

Internet Explorer


  • Click the Tools icon (gear)
  • Click Internet options
  • Under the General tab on the upper-left-hand side, scroll down to Browsing history
  • Select Delete…
  • Check the Temporary Internet Files and website files, Cookies and website data, History, and Download History boxes
  • Click Delete
  • Close Internet Explorer and reopen it for changes to take effect
