In Eastern Kentucky University’s (EKU) College of Business, the journey from idea to enterprise begins in the classroom, where students sketch out business plans, form LLCs and pitch startups with support from faculty and mentors. With real-world applications and hands-on learning, EKU prepares aspiring entrepreneurs to turn passion into purpose.
Here are five ways to cultivate your entrepreneurial goals at EKU.
Add a Minor in Innovation and Entrepreneurial Thinking
Through specialized minors like innovation and entrepreneurial thinking or sales, students gain the tools they need to develop practical, transferable skills across a range of industries.
Cameron Hechemy, a finance major pursuing the innovation and entrepreneurial thinking minor, is working on an AI solution to guide students through the complex financial aid process. Along with Hechemy’s AI company, he has already applied his minor to his car detailing business. “I feel like a whole different person now,” said Hechemy from Berea, Kentucky. “I learned through detailing the need of having a good product and making sure you deliver for your customers.”
Meanwhile, Trinity Harris, a senior marketing major from Berea, is putting her passion for small business ownership into motion with a minor in sales. “For the purpose of starting a small business, having a sales background will help shape me into being a good salesperson, for my business and myself,” Harris said. “Selling yourself, your idea and your business is one of the most important parts of owning a small business.”
Fund Your Business Idea at Scholars Tank
A launchpad for student entrepreneurs, EKU’s annual Scholars Tank event invites students to pitch their business concepts to a panel of local business owners and professionals—for a chance to secure up to $5,000 in funding to jumpstart their own business.
Already the owner and operator of a vending machine company with multiple locations across Madison County, Harris pitched a tour bus business to offer college students a flexible and affordable way to travel. Her passion and preparation paid off—she earned second place at Scholars Tank and a $500 scholarship to continue growing her business.
Collaborate With Colonel Entrepreneurs (E-Club)
Students interested in entrepreneurship learn the value of collaboration through the Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club). Backed and funded by Awesome Inc, a Lexington-based organization that supports startups and early-stage entrepreneurs, E-Club gives EKU students the opportunity to network, collaborate and grow their business ideas alongside peers and local professionals.
For students like Trevor Stodghill, who works in a family-run business, and Tanner Martin, who owns a pressure washing company, E-Club provides a platform to share experiences, seek advice and build relationships with others on similar paths.
See how Business Ideas Take Shape
Starting a business takes resources, networks and strategic guidance. At EKU, students don’t have to look far for that support. Under the leadership of Dr. Tom Martin, dean of the College of Business, Pioneer Venture was created to provide just that. This Kentucky-based limited liability company was designed to pool capital and connect entrepreneurs with the networks and funding they need to launch and grow successful businesses.
EKU students receive the opportunity to be part of the process. In the coming year, students will play a direct role in identifying startups and participating in the due diligence process—gaining valuable insight into what makes a business idea investable and learning how to evaluate real companies for feasibility and growth potential.
Earn Scholarships to EKU
The Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute (ELI), hosted by The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, is a week-long, intensive summer program designed for high school students with big ideas and the drive to bring them to life. ELI immerses students in hands-on learning, mentorship and real-world experiences that walk them through the startup process, from brainstorming and market research to business development and pitching. In a team competition, students present their startup concepts to a panel of judges, and this year’s winning team received a scholarship offer to attend EKU.
