On March 22, more than 40 students from the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Choirs stepped into the spotlight at Carnegie Hall, one of the most iconic concert venues in the world, for a performance they will never forget. This marked EKU’s first major choir tour since 2017.
The students, representing all three EKU choral ensembles, joined choirs from across the country to perform Illuminare by Elaine Hagenberg, accompanied by a full orchestra.
“Performing at Carnegie Hall is a dream that few musicians ever get to experience in their lifetime, and our students were fortunate enough to make that dream a reality,” said EKU President David McFaddin. “It’s a testament to their talent, the dedication of our faculty and EKU’s commitment to providing opportunities that inspire and open doors far beyond the classroom.”
The concert, produced by National Concerts and conducted by Dr. Jeffery Redding of the University of Central Florida, included two days of rehearsal in New York and opportunities for the students to explore the city, including attending the Broadway production of Hamilton.
“This is an experience our students will cherish forever,” said Dr. Richard Waters, director of choral activities at EKU. “Carnegie Hall is THE performing venue for any artist.”
Harper Grizzle, a junior majoring in music education from Ashland, Kentucky, said she chose EKU after attending the university’s Foster Music Camp, the second-oldest music camp in the United States.
“Everybody in the music department has been so welcoming to me,” said Grizzle. “They’re always willing to help. They’re always willing to give me an extra hand. They’re the best people in the world.”
Grizzle discovered in the spring of 2025 that she would be performing at Carnegie Hall, and at first, it didn’t feel real. Once she left class, she called her mom, who was just as excited.
The preparation began in the fall of 2025, with months of rehearsals led by Dr. Waters and Dr. Jill Campbell, associate professor in EKU’s School of Music. The work was challenging, but it gave Grizzle the confidence she needed to take the stage.
Once the final note of Illuminare was sung, the audience erupted into a roaring applause and a standing ovation, leaving Grizzle overwhelmed with emotion. Tears streamed down her face as she stood shoulder to shoulder with her best friend, who had gone through the music program with her. It was Grizzle’s first time in New York, her first time on a plane and her first time performing in Carnegie Hall, and the entire experience felt surreal. She calls it the best trip of her life, knowing she may never have another opportunity like it, and says it will be an incredible story to share with her future choir students.
“What the EKU School of Music and EKU Choirs have given me is beyond my wildest dreams,” said Grizzle. “If you’re from Eastern Kentucky, believe you can do it.”
