Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) is enhancing the student flight training experience by upgrading its aviation fleet with new Piper Aircraft, further strengthening hands-on learning opportunities at Kentucky’s only FAA Part 141 collegiate flight program.
“Students come to EKU from all over the nation to learn to fly and pursue an aviation aerospace career,” said EKU President David McFaddin. “We continue to lead in aviation education as the only program of its kind in the state and invest in the best learning resources for our students.”
Beginning in Fall 2026, EKU will introduce two Piper Pilot 100i aircraft into its training fleet. The Piper Pilot 100i is a single-engine trainer aircraft designed specifically for the needs of flight schools and training programs. The new aircraft were selected for their reliability, advanced training capabilities and comprehensive fleet support, enhancing the student learning experience.
“The addition of new Piper Pilot 100i aircraft represents a significant investment in the future of aviation education at Eastern Kentucky University,” said Dr. Tim Holt, chair of EKU’s School of Aviation. “This venture expands hands-on learning opportunities and helps ensure our graduates are prepared to meet the highest standards of the industry as aviation leaders. The collaborative relationship between Piper and EKU exemplifies a commitment to developing the next generation of skilled, professional pilots, and our unwavering commitment to excellence.”
EKU’s School of Aviation continues to grow as one of the university’s most in-demand academic programs. The Bachelor of Science in Aviation offers a highly competitive concentration in professional flight, as well as concentrations in aerospace management, professional aeronautics and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Beginning in 2027, the program will also offer a concentration in air traffic management, creating even more pathways for students pursuing careers in the aviation industry. The program has built a reputation for preparing workforce-ready graduates, with job placement rates consistently ranging from 98% to 100%.
