In Washington Monthly’s 2026 “Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars” rankings, EKU placed first among Kentucky’s public universities, reflecting the university’s commitment to affordability and access to higher education.
Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) ranked first among Kentucky’s public universities in Washington Monthly’s 2026 “Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars” list, placing No. 41 among colleges in the South and in the top 30% of 1,504 colleges ranked nationally.
“Being Kentucky’s School of Opportunity means making higher education accessible and affordable,” said EKU President David McFaddin. “Washington Monthly’s recognition reflects our commitment to removing barriers for students through expanded scholarships and reduced graduate tuition in fields that are crucial to our Commonwealth’s workforce. We want more students to have the opportunity to earn a degree and build a successful future.”
According to Washington Monthly, this list shows institutions that provide good value to both students and taxpayers, ranking schools based on their contribution to the public good in access, affordability, outcomes and service.
EKU’s affordability efforts include expanded scholarships for Kentucky freshmen and reduced graduate tuition in education, business, criminal justice and public health. For Fall 2026, EKU introduced the Promise Award, providing at least $1,000 to every in-state, on-campus, full-time freshman. EKU is the only university in Kentucky to offer a scholarship to every Kentucky freshman.
Kara Bullock, a senior global supply chain management major from Brodhead, Kentucky, said, “As a first-generation college student who is paying for college myself, affordability was an important factor in choosing EKU. EKU has allowed me to receive a quality education at a relatively affordable cost while still giving me access to valuable opportunities, mentors, professional connections and student organizations.”
EKU’s in-state tuition remains below the national average for public four-year institutions, and more than 80% of students receive financial aid. The university also offers one of the most competitive out-of-state tuition rates in the country, helping make a college degree more accessible for all students.
