Michael Nygren Honored with EKU’s Distinguished Service Award

Michael Nygren, ’70, was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). The Best of Eastern Alumni Awards, presented annually during Homecoming weekend, celebrate excellence among EKU alumni. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes those who have demonstrated a heart of service with EKU or within their communities. Recipients of this award are giving of their time and talents in an effort to support awareness, facilitate growth and advocate for those around them.

When Nygren stepped off a Greyhound bus in Richmond, Kentucky, at 17 years old, he carried two suitcases and the determination to make the most of an opportunity. At EKU, he found not only an education, but mentors, friends and the love of his life. That foundation launched a career—and a lifetime—defined by service.

“It was at EKU that I gained the confidence, skills and inspiration to go out into the world and try to make a difference,” said Nygren. “If my life has meant something to others—if I’ve served, inspired or lifted anyone up—it’s because of the people and place that first invested in me.”

Inspired by his own high school teacher, Nygren became an educator, teaching industrial arts in Maryland and Ohio before moving into youth ministry and leadership development. His calling was clear: to unlock potential in young people and instill values of respect, discipline and responsibility. Over five decades, he has done just that—leading classrooms, teams, mission trips and student leadership programs that touched thousands of lives. His initiatives, from The Clubhouse to Kids Kamp, empowered generations of students to grow in confidence, character and service.

Nygren’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. As a nonprofit leader and mentor, he directed community service projects across Appalachia, Mexico, Jamaica, New York City, Haiti and beyond. His efforts earned national recognition, including the Point of Light Award from President George H. W. Bush, the Presidential Voluntary Action Award from President Bill Clinton and commendation from Senator John Glenn.

For Nygren, service has never been a title, it is a way of life. Whether through building homes, mentoring at-risk youth or leading faith-based initiatives, his legacy is written in the thousands of lives he has uplifted.

“To have played a meaningful role in someone’s life—that is the greatest contribution I could ever make,” said Nygren.
