More Than Words: EKU Shapes Sign Language Interpreters

At major events and public speeches, a sign language interpreter interprets in real time, making each word clear for Deaf and hard of hearing viewers. This critical service extends beyond the stage and screen to hospitals, classrooms and workplaces, where interpreters help ensure access to communication every day. Yet across the U.S., there are not enough trained professionals to meet the demand. The American Sign Language (ASL) and English Interpretation program at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) prepares students to step into this vital role.

“EKU is home to the only accredited ASL interpreter education program in Kentucky,” said EKU President David McFaddin. “Students in the program not only learn sign language, but they become advocates and leaders who strengthen our Commonwealth and expand access for every Kentuckian—truly reflecting our role at EKU as the School of Opportunity.”

McKenzie Mullins, a senior from Hazard, Kentucky, first discovered her love for sign language while attending community college, then transferred to EKU where she’s majoring in ASL and English Interpretation. At EKU, she became friends with a member of the Deaf community and took every opportunity to volunteer, expand her knowledge in ASL and advocate for others. She also learns from professors who are part of the Deaf community.

Rebecca Kreutzer, ASL specialist III and interpreter outreach coordinator at EKU said, “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping students grow not only in their language skills, but also in their understanding of Deaf culture, community values and professional responsibility.”

Kreutzer grew up in a multi-generational deaf family, so the language was always a natural part of her life. Her personal connection evolved into a professional passion.

“I wanted to contribute to the Deaf community while also helping others learn the language and understand the culture that makes it so meaningful,” said Kreutzer, who is also a graduate of EKU’s program.

EKU ASL alumni stay involved in the program, providing a mock interpreting scenario for students, mentorship throughout practicum placements and opportunities for students to observe them working in professional settings. Mullins is currently interning with an agency that coordinates interpreting services in medical, educational and community event settings. Applying what she has learned in class, Mullins manages turn-taking in conversations, asks for clarification and gives herself time to process what is being communicated between both parties.

EKU’s ASL and English Interpretation program is one of only 15 accredited bachelor’s degree programs in the country. Most students are offered a job immediately after graduation.

“There is currently a nationwide shortage of sign language interpreters, so paired with the excellent education students are receiving at EKU, our graduates are highly sought after,” said Niki Hill, assistant professor in ASL and English Interpretation and interpreting training program coordinator. “I continually have colleagues from across the United States asking for my recommendations for recent graduates and as the practicum supervisor, I am often told that our students are the most prepared when coming into internships compared to their peers from other institutions.”

For many, EKU’s ASL program transforms the way they see the world as they join a community that values connection, culture and service. With partnerships in the Deaf community, an engaged alumni network and immersive hands-on learning, EKU’s American Sign Language and English Interpretation program prepares students to enter the field with confidence.
