Public Health and Kindness

In recognition of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September and World Mental Health Day on October 10th, EKU Public Health continued its outreach with a Kindness Tabling Event focused on promoting mental health awareness and fostering compassion across campus. The event featured “kindness gumballs” each containing an encouraging action to brighten someone’s day—such as “call your mom and tell her why you love her” or “give a stranger a compliment”. Additionally, High Five Cards were created and handed out; these are similar to a postcard that you can send to your friends, peers, or professors to give them a positive shout-out.

Dr. Lauren Baney, Assistant Professor of Public Health, supported our student group in the development of the event. Dr. Baney states, “we wanted to create a tabling event that did more than just explain what mental health was.” The event was well attended and received and as Dr. Baney shared from her experience, “it was great to connect with students and encourage them to spread kindness and social connections.”

Eta Sigma Gamma officers, Maddie Bowen, President, Megan Million, Vice President, and Natalia Montalvo-Villa, Secretary, were an important part of the implementation of the kindness event. Natalia shared the “event celebrated mental health through kindness, and it was inspiring to see our campus unite [together].”

It’s important to remember kindness in our daily interactions with our peers, faculty, and staff in our campus community. Help us spread kindness!
