Whitnee Coy Honored with EKU’s Young Alumni Award

Dr. Whitnee Coy, ’15, was awarded with the Young Alumni Award from Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). The Best of Eastern Alumni Awards, presented annually during Homecoming weekend, celebrate excellence among EKU alumni. The Young Alumni Award recognizes individuals who graduated from EKU in the last 10 years and have demonstrated exceptional talent in their professions.

Raised in Lexington by her hardworking mother and grandmother, Coy grew up surrounded by examples of resilience and perseverance. From her grandmother’s long nights as an emergency room nurse to her mother’s determination to earn a doctorate, Coy learned early that education could open doors and that dreams were worth chasing. She has now followed in those same footsteps—earning her own doctorate while balancing the fullness of family life with her husband and their three children, instilling the deep family convictions that have guided her success as a writer, teacher and advocate.

Today, she is the author of five poetry collections and two award-winning children’s books—each one a reflection of courage, creativity and hope. Her career in education has been just as meaningful. From directing leadership and professional development programs in public schools to teaching at Oglala Lakota College in South Dakota, she pours her energy into helping students find their voices and embrace their worth. For Coy, success has never been about recognition; it’s about impact, and leaving others stronger than when she found them.

Much of that path began at EKU. In the Bluegrass Writers Studio, Coy found mentors who believed in her voice, friendships that still sustain her and opportunities that stretched her far beyond the classroom. Whether in Lisbon during a summer abroad or in late-night workshops with fellow writers, she discovered the confidence to build the life she dreamed of.

“At EKU, the Bluegrass Writers Studio was life-changing,” Coy said. “Having professors who remain invested in their students long after they graduate speaks volumes about the kind of community EKU fosters. The friendships and bonds I built there continue to support me both personally and professionally, and those connections have enriched my life and career.”

EKU will always be home for Coy—a place where she was encouraged, challenged and embraced. Her story serves as a reminder that education is more than learning; it is belonging, and it is the courage to carry your story into the world.
