Born in Minnesota, Finn Gosnell spent his early childhood in the upper Midwest before relocating to Kentucky at age nine. He lived in and around the Louisville area until graduating from high school, eventually choosing to continue his academic journey at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). Eastern’s affordability and strong science programs made it the right fit for both his goals and budget.
Understanding that he would be financing his education independently, Gosnell sought a university where he could pursue rigorous academic work without taking on overwhelming debt. EKU’s cost-effective tuition, combined with the Foundation Scholarship he earned, allowed him to focus on learning rather than financial strain. He was also drawn to EKU’s unique combination of STEM and social science programs—opportunities he didn’t find at every institution.
Gosnell began his studies as a geosciences major, later transitioning to anthropology while maintaining a strong STEM foundation through a minor in geology, along with a certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). His interdisciplinary path reflects his commitment to applying scientific methods to real-world cultural and environmental challenges.
He hopes to work in public service with Indigenous communities, using geospatial analysis, geological knowledge and anthropological research to support land rights, cultural preservation and policy advocacy. Long-term, he plans to pursue graduate study in both anthropology and geology.
Reflecting on his time at EKU, he shared “I think that the most important thing that I have learned while here at EKU is to take advantage of my resources, both on campus and the connections that my professors can provide for me. They know people that I don’t and can put me into contact with people that can help me reach my goals in ways that I hadn’t thought of.”
Outside of class, Gosnell is a member of the geology club, the archaeology club and is a fraternity brother of Alpha Phi Omega. He plans to graduate in December 2026.
